A long-standing partner at Three Rivers Orthopedic Associates, Dr. Baum joined the practice in 1989, after graduating from medical school at the University of Virginia, and doing a residency and spinal fellowship through the University of Pittsburgh. While some of his techniques have changed throughout his 26 years of practice, patient-centered care is still a priority.

“In some of the bigger clinics, doctors are not seeing patients… we use our physician assistants for support, not for pre- and post-op care. Here, you get hands-on care and face-to-face interaction with seasoned physicians,” said Dr. Baum.

About 80% of Dr. Baum’s surgeries result from adult degenerative spine conditions. He has been certified and re-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons twice since 1989, but said that his main source of satisfaction still comes from hearing patients simply say, “thank you.”

Dr. Baum recently joined the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Committee on Professionalism. As an active member, he participates in legal processes to adjudicate grievances between fellows.
